1. Find out how long your contractor has been working in the field. Check with the local Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints have been filed against the company or if there are any pending cases.

2. Be certain that your contractor is properly licensed to work in the state where the project is located. Contacting your local building department or consumer protection agency to learn what your state requires in order to issue a license to a contractor. Be aware whether your state requires a contractor be licensed, and, if so always ask to see your contractor's license before you hire them to perform any kind of work.

3. Request a listing of projects that are similar to your own that your contractor has completed recently and inspect the work yourself. If your contractor did a good job on a past project chances are good that he will do a good job on your project as well.

4. Arrange for any special permits that will be necessary to complete the project before you allow your contractor to begin the work. The home owner may face a fine if the required permits are not obtained before the work is actually begun. Make sure that you and your contractor agree on who will be responsible for getting the permits at the beginning of the interaction.

5. Always be sure to get the names of all the individuals assigned to work on the project including the supervisor and the names of the entire construction crew.
